FAQs

Q: What IS a lead sheet? I’ve heard of them, but I’ve never played from one before.

A: A lead sheet is a simplified form of musical notation that includes the melody and chord symbols. Lead sheets give you just the right blend of structure and freedom, so you can create & play music without needing a written arrangement! (It’s ALMOST as good as peanut butter and chocolate.)

BTW: There’s nothing wrong with written arrangements… hey, I create them, play from them, and publish them! There’s room for ALL kinds of musical formats, including written arrangements AND lead sheets. It depends on your individual needs and wants as a musician.

Q: What do I need to know/be able to do before taking this workshop? 🤔

A: If you can read and play a simple treble clef tune with your right hand, and accompany the tune with a left hand note on each downbeat, good news! You’ve got the skills you need to join in. After that, this workshop will guide you step-by-step. Still wondering if this workshop is for you? I’ll be happy to help you make the right choice for you. Email me with questions.

Q: Is this workshop suitable for all harp skill levels? 🌎

A: Absolutely! This workshop is designed for both beginners and those with some experience. We’ll use familiar Christmas carols to get you started with lead sheet basics.

Q: When do I get the workshop music and Zoom link? 📥

A: I’ll send you an email, with the Zoom link and the music PDF, a couple of days before the workshop.

Q: How long is the workshop?

A: Expect a mix of instructional time, practice sessions, and Q&A, lasting around 60 minutes. There’ll be a 5-minute stretch break halfway through the workshop.

Q: What else will I need (besides my harp) for this workshop? ✏️

A: Great question! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Computer or mobile device and Internet access (to access Zoom)
  • Music stand (we’ll read music in this workshop)
  • Workshop PDF print/download (emailed shortly before workshop)
  • Harp tuned to key of C tuning
  • Note taking materials (analog or digital)
  • Water, etc.—stay hydrated!
  • A well-lit location, where you and your harp won’t be interrupted

Q: I play a lap harp/lever harp/pedal harp/wire-strung harp/ double-strung harp/cross-strung harp. Will that be OK for this workshop? 🎵

A: Yes—ALL harps are invited! We’ll play music in key of C tuning, so don’t worry about changing levers or pedals during the workshop. (I’ll remind you about this in the workshop email with the music, shortly before the big day.)

Q: Although I can read music, I’m more comfortable learning by ear. Do you have any resources available to help auditory learners? 🎧

A: Glad you asked! When I send the workshop materials email, I’ll include audio (MP3) download links for the 3 carol tunes, along with the workshop PDF. I’ll also use verbal cues while teaching the workshop.

Q: I might get abducted by aliens during the workshop. Will you have an intergalactic replay? 👽

A: Yes! Technology willing, you’ll have access to the Zoom recording, so you can catch up at your convenience and learn at your own pace.

Q: Sign me up! How can I register?

A: It’s super easy! Just click the payment link on this page (by November 20), follow the instructions, and you’ll be all set to join us on November 23. Workshop seats are limited; register by 11:59 PM US Central Time on 20 November 2024 to hold your place!
